Our Mission and Heritage

First Lutheran Church of Placerville is a vibrant community of believers dedicated to living out the teachings of Jesus Christ. As part of the worldwide Christian Church, we are committed to spreading the message of God’s love and mercy. Our roots are deeply embedded in the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther, which sparked the Reformation and continue to guide our faith today. We are proud to be affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, upholding a tradition of Biblical conservatism and confessional integrity.

We invite you to explore our rich history and join us in our mission to share the gifts of forgiveness and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. Our church is a place where all are welcome to experience the transformative power of God’s grace.

Our Core Beliefs

At First Lutheran Church of Placerville, we believe in one true God, who reveals Himself as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This foundational belief is rooted in the Holy Scriptures and is central to our faith and practice.

The Trinity

The Trinity is a profound mystery and a cornerstone of our faith. We believe that God exists as three distinct persons in one divine essence, each fully God, yet there is only one God. This belief is supported by passages such as Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19, and 2 Corinthians 13:14.

The Sacraments

We uphold the practice of two sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These sacred acts are means through which God imparts His grace to us. Baptism is seen as God’s work, offering forgiveness and salvation, while the Lord’s Supper is a means of receiving the true body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins.

The Reformation's Impact

Martin Luther’s teachings were pivotal in reforming the Church during the 16th century. His emphasis on the Bible as the sole authority for Christian faith and practice challenged the existing norms and led to significant changes in church doctrine and practice. Luther’s insistence on salvation by faith alone and the priesthood of all believers reshaped the spiritual landscape, emphasizing a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

The Reformation, sparked by Luther’s 95 Theses, was a movement that sought to return to the core teachings of Christianity as found in Scripture. This movement not only redefined the Church’s beliefs but also democratized religious knowledge, making the Bible accessible to the common people. The legacy of the Reformation continues to influence the teachings and practices of the First Lutheran Church of Placerville today.

Our Confessional Identity

Faithful Declarations

As a confessional church, we at First Lutheran Church of Placerville uphold the importance of publicly declaring our faith. This identity is rooted in our adherence to the three ecumenical creeds: the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed. These creeds serve as faithful summaries of Christian doctrine, uniting believers in a shared understanding of the faith.

The creeds are not merely historical documents but living declarations that guide our beliefs and practices. They affirm our commitment to the foundational truths of Christianity, such as the Trinity, the incarnation, and the resurrection. By embracing these creeds, we connect with the historic Christian faith and affirm our place within the broader Christian community.

Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord's Supper

At First Lutheran Church of Placerville, we recognize two sacraments as central to our faith: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Baptism is viewed as a divine act where God forgives sins, grants salvation, and welcomes believers into His family. This sacrament is rooted in Scripture, with passages such as Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 2:38 highlighting its significance. We baptize individuals of all ages, acknowledging God’s grace in initiating this sacred relationship.

The Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion, is a profound expression of Christ’s presence among us. In this sacrament, we partake in the true body and blood of Jesus, as He instituted in Matthew 26:26-28. It is a means of grace, offering forgiveness and strengthening our faith. We approach the Lord’s Table with reverence, understanding the deep spiritual nourishment it provides.
